Ya did good, my friend. I only knew it because I read it in R&T after it
happened and for some reason it stuck in what's left of my mind. These days I
couldn't tell you the difference between a tribe of pigmys and a womens' track
team, but that stuck for some reason.

Nice story Bubba. I just wwnt by the words you used in your question.

Anyway it's all from the golden age of formula 1 when I was a lad and could
only read about it in Road and Track. The first F1 race I attended was Watkins
Glen in 73, when Francois Cevert was killed during practice.

For the record my guess of 1967 was unaided by google or research. The correct
answer of 1965 is horseshoe and open choke shotgun close!

Back to my beer!

See ya

I just said that a Maerati won the 1939 Indy race, not that it counted as a
Grand Prix race back then. HA! to you too, my friend. Back in the day, starting
with the first race in 1911, many different Euoropean cars were entered at the
500 with varied sucess, none of which were awarded points tward the WMC. I
might not have been sober and lucid at all times during the 1950-'60s, but I
faintly remember that John Cooper brought Black Jack Brahbam
and his Cpooper over for the 1961 race. Finished 10th I believe with his
little underpowered Climax engine. Same went for this chap Colin Chapman
bringing over his Lotus for Jimmy Clark to drive with a V-8 Ford stuffed in it.
BTW, Clark won the 1965 race. I still have my Press Tower pass for that
one. Jimmy should have won the '64 race too, but Parneli Jones, in J.C.
Agajanian's 'ole #98 front engine Offy 'Calhoun' had a cracked his external oil
tank and spilled enough oil on the track to make Clark spin, allowing Jones to
claim the victory. Black flag for Jones? No way. You can't fight City Hall,
Harlan Fengler, and the USAC good old boys. Colin was piffed, but you can't
fight City Hall and the good ol boys. <g> Paul TRacy learned the same lesson
years later, when he won the 500 and Tony George and the IRL stole it away from
him.

BTW, to add insult to injury, Graham Hill won the next year (1966) driving one
of them damned little rear engined foreign cars.

Oh, and by using the Go odyear website, your guess of 1967 is in the ballpark.
Not quite correct, but if you were using a 12-gauge shotgun to hunt hamsters,
you probably would have hit one. Keep trying, my frind, and good luck.

Yer pal, Ferrari Bubba

Well Formula 1 racing dates only back to 1950, so IF Indy was a "Grand Prix"
and IF the Maserati was on Goodyear tires, it WAS NOT a Formula 1
race! HA! Now here are some snippets of Goodyear's history from their own
website: 1964 Craig Breedlove set speed record at Bonneville Salt Flats,
526.28 mph in a jet-powered Spirit of America equipped with Goodyear
tires....Goodyear entered international racing field for first time....New
Italian plant started. 1965 Craig Breedlove broke speed record at Bonneville
Salt Flats at a speed of 600.601 mph on Goodyear tires....In less than two
years after entering international racing competition, Goodyear won the 24
Hours of Le Mans, France.. 1967.A.J. Foyt rode to victory at the
Indianapolis 500, and Dennis Hulme won the 1967 World Driving Championship,
both on Goodyear tires So while this doesn't answer the question definitely of
what year =2 0did a Goodyear shod car first win a Formula 1 race, this seems
to place it sometime between 1964 and 1967, so maybe my guess of 1967 wasn't
so far off after all. What does everyone else have? John In a message

Indy a shot. I think it was in 1952. Either he didn't qualify or was out

was called the Boyle Secial and had shamrocks painted on the sides. Green on
a 1930's American race car? Unheard of! Does anyone remember 'The Race of
Two Worlds"20held at Monza in 1957? It used the infamous banking that we saw
in the film Grand Prix. Jimmy Bryan won that one. Moss in a Maserati, the D
Type Jaguars and a lone Ferrari were also entered. Luigi Musso was the
fastest of the Europeans, but the car DNF'd. Moss took a wicked spin on the
banking when a tyre blew, but as unhurt. I've seen films of it. Frightening!
