IIRC the racer Elan's were fitted with 4 cyl Ford engines that rec'd Cosworth 
heads and Weber carbs.

  ps. a friend of mine did some vintage racing in a couple of Lotus products, 
including open wheelers.  Could of his cars had the Coventry Climax engines.  
With modern rebuilds, they were winding those little suckers up to 9000 rpm!!  
From what I've read of those engines, they had pretty humble beginnings, first 
being developed as a little farm work engine, mostly used to pump water way 
back.  You've come a long way baby. hee hee.

    I had my 68 Lotus Europa shipped by truck once and I would almost
    swear the weight I was quoted was 1150#s.  But that happend 35+
    years ago and I may be wrong --
