The new 7 hasn't been a very good seller either. And yes, Benz does
make taxis in Europe, but cabbies drive them because of their quality
and longevity. I don't think it brings the image of MBZ down. I'd say
it speaks well for them. And the taxis are nowhere near as luxurious as
those built for the public.

Drove the new 7 on Friday. Hated it. Like driving a poorly calibrated video game. Both BMW and Benz are still living on past impressions. Their cars aren't that good. Everyone has built in planned obsolecense now, they want the car to completely fall apart the day after the warranty expires so that you go out and buy a new one. Image is nothing for those that have travelled. Benz makes taxis and the impression in Europe is no one lusts after a BMW, even my German coworkers would prefer their bikes to their cars. I don't get annoyed much if some of these people only want to worship certain prestigious marques....fine, whatever. But I get very annoyed with the arrogance that some marques are automatically better than others and that certain marques (esp. domestic) are POS. I think it's getting better though. People are slowly starting to accept Corvettes, Vipers, Caddies, etc.as legitimate performers beyond a straight line.
