Charles sagely notes "The Boxster (at least our 2001) is also sensationally sensitive to loose gas caps. Sets a CEL every time. At least I can reset that one."

Gas cap loose? Ayep - sets an EVAP - evaporative system monitor. Its a two trip monitor - which means that it will take awhile to set. Startup - run - warm up - shut down. So, generally a trip away from the gas station with a loose cap won't set it. Figure this - on the way home from work - fill up and leave tank loose. Start up and go to work = trip one. Leave work with cold engine and on the way home - - - Bingo. SO tighten cap, drive two more cycles - and light should go off.

The one REAL BADDY monitor is the mis-fire monitor. It collects misfires in bunches of 200 and after x bunches - sets CEL to BLINKING. Why? A misfire is a CAT killer. Melt down the cat and now you have all sorts of problems - dropping birds out of the air being the least of them. heh heh
