LOL,I had CEL's on my Boxster all the time from the frikking gas cap... And my GTI, and probably once on my M3, German cars... Oh and my favorite is my Vette, god damn if Chevrolet can't figure out how to make a simple thing like a gas cap? That thing is a damned rubiks cube to get on correctly. On the plus side the Vette clears its own CEL for some faults (like the gas cap, which it actually tells you on the computer... Check gas cap!) I really miss my Ferrari's giant screw on aluminum piece... Of course its CEL's were always from piss poor wiring, replace the wires and connectors first! Everything else worked pretty well.
Still miss my Boxster, but the Vette definitely can scare me better. Mike Charles Perry wrote:
That Boxster problem is goofy. I found out about that when I swapped the stereo in my wife's Boxster. Made the mistake of powering up the system to test it before I had put her seat back in (amp & XM were under it). Set the CEL. Nearly impossible to make a non-technical wife feel safe about her driving her car when you tell her the CEL was triggered by the seat belt being disconnected. Quoth her, "I'm not stupid. What the hell does the seat belt have to do with the motor. What did you do to my car?" Strangely, my own OBD-II tester would not reset the light, but lister Karl Troy was kind enough to do it for me. The Boxster (at least our 2001) is also sensationally sensitive to loose gas caps. Sets a CEL every time. At least I can reset that one. -- charles -----Original Message-----From: Doug and Terri Anderson [mailto:dnt [at] dock.net] Sent: Sunday, February 07, 2010 11:37 AMTo: Charles Perry Cc: The FerrariList Subject: Re: [Ferrari] Need group wisdom on pricing for 2007 F430Clyde sez "The modern electrics will not be the issue. How many timeshas a black box failed on you lately ?Clyde - The black box won't fail. The problem is a technicians skill. They simply won't be able to diagnose a driveability problem - and then blame the black box$. Since about 2002 there is a very complicated computer system called CAN or CAN Protocols - even for the cheapest Chevy. CAN Protocols include Controller Area Network (CAN), Local Interconnect Network (LIN) and others. Porsche (bless their little VW souls, now) had a huge check engine lightproblem wiith the Boxster - turns out - - - seat belt latch ground.
