The good old days.  Make power anyway you want, and go as fast as you want. Porsche then show up and ruffles everyone's feathers.  "Well yes, make power anyway you want, but not that way please.  And yes, go as fast as you can, but not that fast please."  And so unlimited racing became less unlimited and the party soon broke up.

But there is vintage and historic racing to keep us all happy.

Ah HAH - just like the old Formula Mondial.  Heck - those guys were only 2 or 3 seconds a lap off of F1 at Long Beach.

          How about requiring all F1 engines and transmissions to be sourced from street cars which are no more than 3 years old and were produced in quantities above 500 per year? Internal parts could be changed except for block, heads and crankshaft. Otherwise open formula.
          That would make F1 relate to street driving very much.
          Just my thoughts
