When I re-did my old Golf's AC, I preferred to keep it R-12 rather than convert. I went to www.epatest.com/, and paid $20 to get an EPA 609 certification. The EPA 609 cert allows you to legally buy R-12. You download the manual, then take an open-book test online. It's REALLY hard to fail, as all the answers are in the manual. I bought my R-12 on eBay, you'll pay around $20-25 a can. Two or three cans will set you back $50-60 or so. You're supposed to email the seller a copy of your EPA 609 cert, but not all sellers require you do that. I recharge my own systems, don't know if you could show up at an AC shop with cans of R-12 and have them do the recharge.
