If you sell privately you are reaching a national audience so local tire kickers will be diminished from that. but you will have to answer a lot of questions - the more in-depth your description and photos the more you can eliminate this. Also be prepared to take the car for a PPI at the request of any serious buyers. That really should be done instead of a test drive ... independent 3rd party opinion on the car.
And make sure before you sell that you get with
someone about the legal paperwork and terms you need to sell and
minimize your liability ...
If you don't get SCM my reference to that was a
Porsche that was sold on BAT and the overseas buyer threatened a
lawsuit over info the buyer provided about the car and accident
history, but BAT didn't include in the description online. I
personally don't like how they work - they decide what info is
put online, and they don't like the car to be advertised
anywhere else except their site.

Brian,
Greatly appreciate the advice, which effectively touches on two of my greatest concerns about selling either way (i.e., privately or to a dealer): perhaps main downside of selling to a dealer is that I would likely pay dearly for that easy, convenient solution, in the form of a discount from eventual sales price to the eventual buyer, whereas if I go through the hassle of an attempted private sale myself (as you and Lash have suggested) I might have to field endless questions -- and deal with supposed buyers who are not really qualified and serious but simply curious and maybe hoping to ride in the car.

Larry if you don't mind having a really good detail done and taking 150 or so really good pics you can sell it yourself ... cars.com, autotrader, carsforsale.com, hemmings.com and about 20 other free sites. You'll want to post a really good, informative writeup so you aren't answering the same questions 100x.
My guess is if you sell the car to a dealer you're going to receive $20k or so less than retail value. 1. they have to make money to support their facilities, 2. they will put some money into the car, because there is *always* something to do to a Ferrari, and to any used car, to prepare them for retail sale. 3. a dealer can probably get more for the car than you can because they are a dealer, they can offer financing and warranties and make buyers feel more comfortable with full inspections and reputation. See if some dealers in your area will consign. That may benefit you both.

Larry, Bring a Trailer or a live auction!Once again I'm thinking about parting with my 1992 512TR -- and more than a bit overwhelmed by the decisions as to how "best" to sell, and what might be a fair price. I consider it to be in really good shape -- whatever that means these days for a car that's driven, not a "garage queen" -- with about 40,000 miles and a major servicing completed about a year ago by specialists at Scuderia Performante (in my local Philadelphia area). A friend suggested F40 Motorsports as one possibility. Certainly selling to a buyer such as them would make the process much easier -- but at what price (i.e., discount from what I might get if I advertised through more conventional public channels), I don't know. Frankly, since there isn't a wealth of data on values, as would be the case with frequently sold vehicles, I don't even have a good handle on what a current fair price might be. I'm in absolutely no rush to sell -- I would do so tomorrow if I were very highly confident that I was receiving a fair price, but I could also comfortably wait years, though it's such a continuing shame that I don't drive it all that much. (Yeah, I know -- please don't simply suggest that I drive it more often.)
Any thoughts (other than driving it to the ghetto, etc.) would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks much,Larry Bardfeld
