I don't think "more rounds to fire" would be a typically valid reason for a
back up handgun, as you can always get additional magazine pouches and
magazines for your primary handgun. I wouldn't know of research, but here
are a few reasons one might consider a back up weapon:

1) Your partner's handgun fails, or perhaps they do not have a handgun, and
you need their assistance either in the fight, or to cover a suspect.

2) Your handgun becomes completely disabled, and immediate action and
remedial action drills will not clear it.

3) For various reasons, your shooting position or physical limitations, it
is easier (and faster) to reach for the back up handgun, rather than perform
a speed load.

*Note: It always amazes me at the cheap and crappy handguns people often
select for a back up (LE included). The excuse is, "well it is only my back
up...so it will be fine". Consider this: If things have reached a point
where you are down to defending yourself with your back up handgun, it must
be pretty dire. For that reason, I would want the highest quality handgun,
and be just as proficient in it's use as my primary handgun.

Not to egg on an OT topic, although I find it interesting, but everyone
seems to be approaching the topic of the backup gun strictly from an "it
gives you more rounds to fire" perspective.

I have never carried a backup, but my own interpretation of its reason for
existing is the unfortunate situation, such as a hostage situation, where
you are required or choose to give up your primary weapon, or when you may
be in an awkward physical position where drawing a backup is easier than
drawing a primary.

Putting aside the obvious answer, which is that giving up your primary
weapon encourages a perp to kill you AND the hostage, is there any research
to indicate having a backup for purposes other than something else to fire
after your primary weapon is empty is worthwhile?
