Seems you have all your answers, so why ask us? Or are you looking for
someone to argue with? ;-)

A 7 is a 7. I know about the prowess of the 540 having owned several. The

"peak" hp you are quoting also doesn't tell the whole story of the power
band. Actually drive a 740 versus a 750, then talk to me about only "12%"
more
hp. You are correct that the 540 is faster, but they are two different
cars.
I want power in a big car. If I wanted only speed for the money, I'd be
driving American...

As for filter, is 5 hp in a pig of car like mine worth longevity? That's
what I'm asking. When the paper element is new, very little gain seems to
be
had with a replacement in tooling around town. I drop in a K&N element
when I
track the car. Yes, I have tracked the 740 "iL". If I want to go fast
around the track for fun, I use an E30 325is.

If you are worried about MPG, one shouldn't be driving a luxury make. A
friend (who traded his E38 sport for a Charger SRT-8) and I were discussing
this
recently. "If I wanted to save gas, I'd drive a prius." The "downgrade" in

luxury from a 7 (or his haulin' ass V8) to a 3 series "is just not worth it

for 5 MPG."

Have you seen the cost of the diff versus the filter? LOL

I think you need more air in as well as more air out

the twelve-cylinder 2001 750iL weighs 21% more than a 540i/6, yet its
V-12 only puts out 12% more horsepower and only 11% more torque, thus
the 540i/6 is a far faster car, 1000 lbs lighter with a lower rear
axle ratio. The bigger cars are geared much taller for quiet luxury.
The MSport has an even more extreme 3.15 to 1 rear ratio - it sucks
gas because of the high revs but I still got 24 mpg at an average
84.6 mph over 600 miles. I would flip rear ends on that 740 series
before putting a high flow element on it, altho it must be said that
the frequent precip makes Seattle's air about as clean as it gets ref
particulate matter.
