Re: Cost of Ferrari Ownership

I think for those who really want one, and if you chose the right model,
owning a ferrari could be a reality for anyone who really wants one. No, I
don't own one, but I have an old porsche and mercedes, and they have been
some of the most affordable cars to run. I know some will say a porsche
isn't a ferrari. Well, if you start off and times everything you do by 2, 6
cylinders vs 12, my belief is they are probably closer in running costs than
most think. Sure, some ferrari parts prices are nuts, but there are enough
places around selling parts and remanufactured parts, if you really want
one, you could probably own and run one. I've seen water pumps for ferraris
with a ten fold difference in price online. The windows in a 456 may be
crap, but no worse than the air boxes in an early 911 that like to go bang,
or funny leaky head gaskets on a mercedes with a little mileage.

I think if you're buying an older car, good rule of thumb is what Jay Leno
once said. "Whatever you spend on the car, have about a 1/3 of that set
aside to sort it". Also, if you buy a car you really love, even after you
open your wallet for some repairs, the pleasure you get from it will soon
make you forget about the money. I remember the first valve adjustment I
had done at the dealer for the 911. Bit of shock, but by time I got it into
3rd gear, I forgot all about the cost. So I ate a little less that month,
the car put a bigger grin on my face than anything I'd ever eaten anyway.
