I believe the diode board is in the alternator it self.

That is impossible.  All 3 diodes are subject to the same loading. 
When a diode fails in that configuration, it is due to a doping 
anomoly or surface fault from welding flash during lead attach, 
or from failure of the chip bond to heat sink.  While many other isoteric 
faults are possible, none are related to external circuitry.

It isn't the fault of the repair facility unless the regulator required
heat sink installation which is of paramount reliability importance.

Has anyone done their own 308 alternator regulator replacement and
can remember the physical layout and requirements of the job?
