Turns out it was a bad diode in the alternator.  The automotive electric 
repair shop that did the rebuild last fall tried to blame it on a 
circuit fault in the instrument panel that caused an over current 
drain.  I  believe he was just trying to point the finger away from 
himself.  FoNE stood behind their work and did not charge to diagnose, 
remove, shlep it to the shop, re-install, and test.  And they did a 
great job washing the TR to boot!
