Phil:

Only the later LS series are all alum engines and create a weight savings.
These were fitted in Corvettes from 1997 on, and Camaros from somewhere
around 1999.

Someone makes a bunch of conversion kits (do a Google, I think you can find
them) to stuff Corvette motors into just about anything, including your
kitchen blender. They show the weight differentials.
The most surprising (to me at least...) is the Nissan 240SX (rear drive
variants). Apparently that 4 cyl was a real porker. Also, the old inline 6
in the 240/260/280Z was extemely heavy, and benefits big time in the
handling department from a Corvette transplant.
More power, less weight, and a rearward weight shift. You can stand in
between the radiator and engine in a 240Z conversion.
Most of these conversions include (or require) the later 6 speed from the
Corvette donor.

The chebby is actually lighter than the Audi / Porsche engine? Do you
know by how much??

Now I have too wonder about a 3.8 V6??? That would work. Wouldn't it?

A local mechanic has been stuffing late model Corvette V8s
into 944s. Fits quite well.

He has to cut a bit off the front springs because the V8 is lighter.

One very important thing to remember is that displacement does
*not* equate

Many of the cute, little, impressively "efficient" powerplants
are secretly
massive and heavy.

Remember that 944 Turbo?

It seemed so "high tech" next to a Ferrari until you
photographed the
engine bay near a tape measure.
