Peter, my MGB is timed at 10 degrees BTDC at 600rpm
idle and can advance as much as 20 degrees under
operating conditions.
In your line, "they've set it up at 12deg BTDC. I
know usually it's 5deg or so, and the aussie spec
pollution requirement is actually 1-2deg ATDC." is
interesting. My MG idles at 10 degrees BTDC with the
vacuum advance operating so that much advance is not
uncommon. HOWEVER, the retarded spark may be a little
'greener'. I'm guessing here but what other reason
might there be for, "...and the aussie spec pollution
requirement is actually 1-2deg ATDC." If you have to
pass an emissions test you may have to retard the
spark to pass then reset it to operating condition.
Here in Houston we have all kinds of emissions tests
BUT there are no tests for antiques - defined as 25
years and older.
   Good luck.
